The Introductory Box
The Introductory Box
Discover just how good English wine is. Working with our Master of Wine, we’ve put together the Introductory Box as an example of wine grown and produced throughout the country. From a Bacchus produced in Norfolk to a Pinot Gris from one of the most exciting new growers in Kent and a sumptuous sparkling all the way down in Devon, this selection showcases the true varietal nature of English wine, demonstrating the skill of the English winemaker. A great introductory box.
The Flint Bacchus 2018 has a typical Bacchus freshness and vibrant acidity but what is distinctive is the layered aromatics and flavours which make this a wine to sip and explore as well as seek another glass. The complex range of flavours and citrus nature make this a wine suitable for lighter dishes with an array of spices and flavours. So it matches Thai or spicy foods well such as fish curries or lemongrass based dishes.
Flint Vineyard is located in Waveney Valley, in south Norfolk. The owners, Ben and Hannah Witchell began their wine journey in 2007 by deciding to quit their jobs abd spend time travelling around the world visiting and working in wine regions around around the world. On their return, in 2010. Ben began a three year wine production course at Plumpton college. Upon graduating he and Hannah moved to Beaujolais where Ben had managed to secure a winemaking position before starting the Flint vineyard.
The Heppington Pinot Gris 2019 is the first wine released from the grapes grown at the vineyard. The wine is pale and star bright with a fresh nose of apple and pear leading to a crisp, balanced palate. The fruits are citrus and pear with a hint of tropical mango and pineapple, the acidity is keen, the wine vibrant. It is a great aperitif but a super partner for seafood, try with calamari, white bait or delicate white fish such as plaice or dover sole.
The Lyme Bay Brut Reserve has a clean nose, fresh apples and fresh cobnuts come to mind, with a light bready hint. The palate is light and fresh and clean. There is a lively mousse, a citrus streak and notes of green apples. This is not a heavy wine, its joy comes in its lightness, it brightens up the palate, revives and refreshes. Whilst the wine has a number of years in bottle it remains vibrant and lively. This is a perfect aperitif, dry with a merest hint of sweetness, a true palate arouser. No need for food partners with this wine, simply pour and enjoy.
